Why We Work With Island Yoga on Koh Yao Noi

There are some places that make it easier to slow down.

Places where the morning light feels softer, the sea is never far away and life seems to move at a gentler pace. Koh Yao Noi is one of them, and Island Yoga has become a special part of our Thailand retreat experience here.

During our Freedom retreats on Koh Yao Noi, we use Island Yoga’s beautiful wooden shala for our practices, enjoy healthy buffet breakfasts together and begin our mornings with Tai Chi beside the sea as the sun rises.

It gives our guests the chance to experience one of the best-known yoga spaces on Koh Yao Noi while being part of a carefully curated Freedom retreat filled with practice, island adventures, shared meals, meaningful connection and plenty of time to simply be.

What is Island Yoga on Koh Yao Noi?

Island Yoga is an established yoga and wellbeing centre on the peaceful Thai island of Koh Yao Noi.

Surrounded by tropical nature and overlooking the remarkable limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay, it offers a setting that feels worlds away from Thailand’s busier resorts. The centre is known for its open-air yoga spaces, sunrise Tai Chi, nourishing vegetarian food and slower approach to island life.

It isn’t polished or corporate. That is exactly why we love it.

Island Yoga feels grounded, welcoming and connected to its surroundings. You can hear the birds during practice, feel the warmth of the morning air and look out towards the sea rather than a studio wall.

It is a place that encourages you to stop rushing and properly arrive.

Our relationship with Island Yoga

Our Koh Yao Noi retreats are independently organised, hosted and supported by Freedom Yoga & Retreats.

The retreat does not take place entirely at Island Yoga, and our guests stay in private, air-conditioned accommodation selected separately by Freedom. Accommodation is located nearby, no more than a short walk from the beach, giving everyone their own comfortable space to return to throughout the week.

We work with Island Yoga because it allows our guests to experience some of the most special parts of its programme while still enjoying the complete Freedom retreat journey.

That means we can combine meaningful yoga and meditation with sunrise Tai Chi, nourishing breakfasts, Thai massage, longtail-boat adventures, kayaking, local creativity and time to explore Koh Yao Noi.

You are not simply booking a stay at a yoga centre. You are joining a fully curated Freedom retreat in Thailand, with the accommodation, scheduled transfers, practices and experiences brought together for you.

Practising in Island Yoga’s wooden shala

There is something very different about practising yoga in an open wooden shala surrounded by tropical nature.

You are not cut off from the island. You can feel the air moving, hear the sounds around you and notice the light changing as the practice unfolds.

During our Koh Yao Noi yoga retreats, the shala gives us a dedicated space for yoga, meditation, mindful movement, philosophy and quiet reflection. Some practices may feel energising and expansive. Others are slower — designed to soften tired bodies after a day of exploring and give everything somewhere to land.

The practice is never about performance or achieving the most impressive posture.

It is an invitation to become more present. To move with curiosity. To breathe a little more deeply and notice what happens when there is finally less noise competing for your attention.

You do not need to be an experienced yogi to join us. Whether yoga is already an important part of your life or you are simply ready to explore it more deeply, the practices are designed to meet you where you are.

Sunrise Tai Chi by Island Yoga, Koh Yao Noi

Sunrise Tai Chi beside the sea

Mornings on Koh Yao Noi begin before the island fully wakes.

We meet beside the sea for sunrise Tai Chi, moving gently as the sky changes colour over Phang Nga Bay.

There is no pressure to get it right. Tai Chi is slow, steady and meditative — a chance to wake the body gradually while settling the mind.

Beginning the day this way creates a completely different rhythm.

Instead of reaching for your phone or immediately thinking about what needs to be done, you begin with movement, breath, warm air and the sound of the water. It is simple, but it often becomes one of the moments guests remember most.

Some mornings flow from Tai Chi into yoga or meditation. On others, the day opens into breakfast, rest or one of our island adventures.

The rhythm changes, but the intention remains the same: to create enough space for you to experience Koh Yao Noi without rushing through it.

Healthy buffet breakfasts after practice

After morning Tai Chi and practice, we come together for a healthy vegetarian buffet breakfast at Island Yoga.

Expect colourful fruit, nourishing dishes and an abundant choice of food designed to leave you feeling energised for the day ahead.

Breakfast is not treated as something to grab on the way to the next activity. It is part of the retreat experience.

It is a chance to sit together, talk about the morning, drink tea or coffee and decide whether the rest of the day calls for swimming, exploring, reading, adventuring or doing very little at all.

Some of the loveliest retreat conversations happen around the breakfast table, when nobody needs to rush away.

Why Koh Yao Noi is perfect for an island yoga retreat

Koh Yao Noi sits in Phang Nga Bay, between Phuket and Krabi. It is surrounded by warm water, limestone karsts, mangrove forests and smaller islands that seem to rise straight from the sea.

Unlike some of Thailand’s better-known destinations, Koh Yao Noi still moves at a slower pace.

There are fishing villages, quiet roads, local restaurants, beaches, rubber plantations and pockets of everyday island life. It feels peaceful without leaving you with nothing to explore.

That balance is why we return.

Our Thailand retreats bring together yoga and meditation with the experiences that make this part of the world so extraordinary. Depending on your chosen retreat, your journey may include kayaking through mangroves, travelling across Phang Nga Bay by traditional longtail boat, swimming in turquoise water, enjoying a Thai massage or learning the local art of batik.

There is movement and adventure, but there is also space.

Space to read. Swim. Journal. Nap. Talk. Wander. Or do absolutely nothing for a while.

More than an Island Yoga retreat

Island Yoga is a beautiful part of our experience, but it is only one part of the wider Freedom journey.

From the moment the retreat begins, we take care of the details that can make organising a Thailand trip feel overwhelming. Your private accommodation, scheduled transfers between Phuket and Koh Yao Noi, selected meals, practices and planned experiences are brought together into one carefully shaped itinerary.

You will have guidance and community when you want it, along with enough freedom to retreat into your own space when you need to.

There is no forced bonding and no expectation to take part in every moment. Come to the practices. Join the adventures. Skip something and read beside the sea.

This is your retreat too.

We believe the most memorable experiences are not created by filling every hour. They come from finding the right balance between practice and play, stillness and adventure, community and time alone.

Island Yoga helps us create that balance beautifully.
